You need to use a NCSA httpd style password file if you are using the NCSA
authentication helper..
username:crypt_encoded_password
These are most easily created with the htpasswd tool (shipped with Apache, but
can also be found separately). Note that you may need to specify an option to
htpasswd for using the crypt password format..
