My experience is that the VM in Linux-2.4 MUST have a sufficient swap
space to work proper. At least the size of your physical ram, plus the
amount of swap space you want to have. Linux 2.4 likes to keep stuff
both on swap and in memory for performance reasons and does not free
swapped in pages while they remain in memory.
Without any swap I find that the kernel often runs out of memory, most
likely due to allowing the amount of dirty buffers to grow too large.
