I've been running a couple of systems on 2.4.x for a while with few
problems - we're currently on 2.4.7 and (famous last words!) all's been
well.
I did have problems on one machine when I tried upgrading to 2.4.8 but this
may not have been kernel-related as I was tinkering around with memory
settings at the same time; I'm still not convinced by stability of VM in
2.4 kernels and consequently I generally keep the machines running with no
swap defined. I've not yet tried 2.4.9.
