No, async-io without using asyncufs does not do anything on Squid-2.3.
You also need to configure your cache_dir as asyncufs to enable
async-io.
asyncufs in Squid-2.3 is what was async-io in Squid-2.2.
However I wouldn't recommend using async-io on Squid-2.3 in a production
system as yet. If you are in need of async-io/asyncufs then I'd
recommend you to use 2.2.STABLE5+patches at this time (see also my Squid
page <http://hem.passagen.se/hno/squid/>).
