squid slow down

We currently serve about 20 req/sec in our test configuration After
about 30-45 minutes of
serving requests perfectly, squid screeches to a halt and gives nothing
but timeouts to the clients. Any ideas why this is happening? It's not
file descriptors (they are set to 16k, netstat -n |wc -l shows that
there are bout 1000 open sockets at a time so I don't think it's that.
CPU usage is around 10% peak. Thanks for any help
