[squid-users] squid at startup

hi everyone...recently, i tried installing squid in ubuntu via "sudo
apt-get install"...after the install, i checked:

sudo /etc/init.d/squid status

it tells me that squid is running...i rebooted my pc, checked squid's
status again, still, its up and running...i started configuring squid
at /etc/squid/squid.conf...after configuring and satisfied...i checked
for errors...

sudo squid -k parse

no errors...i rebooted again, after the reboot, i checked squid's
status, now, it is telling me that squid is not running...ive tried so
many ways but to no avail...tried update-rc.d, tried scripting the
rc.local, but no progress at all...

question is:
in order to safeguard my squid's integrity and preventing other users
exploiting my configuration when i'm not around. i've set my system to
autologin as user with administrative privileges, now, how can i make
squid run automatically using this account?in this way, when i'm not
around, other users may just turn the machine on and start browsing
the internet using their own machines?

reasons why i want to this is for security and outsmarting advanced
users here in my office...if they'll only turn the pc, they won't need
my password to do su or sudo...
