well, that's a point ... i'll check when back in front of the box.
in the interim, i have found (stumbled across?) the (an?) apparent culprit ...
changing, in squid.conf,
cache_peer 127.0.0.1 parent 8118 7 default
to
cache_peer 127.0.0.1 parent 8118 7 no-netdb-exchange default
results in my squid-related CPU util staying, now, at < 1%, except, of course,
when accessing a site/page ...
now, as to what i've lost/broken by disabling the 'netdb-exchange' i simply do
not yet know/understand (rtfm'ing ...)
