[squid-users] problems right from the start

Hello,

I am just starting to learn about squid, and hope to be able to use it
as an http accelerator. I've read up on the basic concept of squid,
as well as a guide to setting the squid.conf file. My future squid box
is running Fedora Core 1, and to install squid, I ran:
up2date squid
which installed squid-2.5.STABLE3-2
So, I went through the conf file and set it up as well as I could in order
to use it in http-accel mode. But, I can't get it to start up, and it looks
like the install of squid is wanky . When I run:
/etc/init.d/squid start
I get:

init_cache_dir /var/spool/squid... /etc/init.d/squid: line 162: 13047
Aborted $SQUID -z -F -D 2>/dev/null
Starting squid: /etc/init.d/squid: line 162: 13048 Aborted
$SQUID $SQUID_OPTS 2>/dev/null

when i run:
/etc/init.d/squid status, I get:

squid is stopped
FATAL: getgrnam failed to find groupid for effective group 'squid'
Squid Cache (Version 2.5.STABLE3): Terminated abnormally.
CPU Usage: 0.010 seconds = 0.010 user + 0.000 sys
Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 393
/etc/init.d/squid: line 162: 13068 Aborted $SQUID -k check

I also tried to set the squid.conf file back to its default settings,
but I get the same error
when trying to run the startup script.

Is there a known problem with the Fedora Core 1 squid? Is the
startup script broken?
