The defaults are reasonable.

If you like to gamble then sure, give it a try. Chances are high however
this reduces both stability and performance.

The main optimizations to do in Squid is elsewhere.

 * Harddrive configuration

 * cache_dir type

 * kernel TCP/IP and memory tuning

 * amount of memory

 * squid.conf to match the above..
