You ARE using an external log rotation program. Squid CANNOT gzip the
rotated logs.
Most likely you are using the logrotate program for rotating the logs.
What I think have happened here is either
a) Squid is no longer running on your server.
b) The pid file have been lost, preventing logrotate from telling Squid
that the logfiles have been rotated.
c) The logrotate configuration have been messed up, no longer attempting
to tell Squid that the logs have been rotated.
For a-b a restart of Squid should clear up the situation.
