Depends on how much memory you can afford.. see the Squid FAQ chapter on
memory usage. But as you have plenty of memory this should not be a
problem..

But it should be noted that having much more than about 1 weeks worth of
cacheable traffic in cache is most likely a waste of resources. The hit
ratio of objects much older than that is close to nil.

Because your cache is not large enough to fill all 16. Squid uses as
many L2 directories as it needs for the cache size, and as many L1
directories as it needs to fit the needed L2 directories..
