MS KB article 267569 references a white paper 'e2kfrontback.exe'. You
are referring to "front-end-https: on", which does what it says.
MS KB article 307347 documents the same custom HTTP header. Sigh, sorry
about the misdirection.
Anyway, the white paper I mention above is probasbly useful, as it has a
section on troubleshooting OWS logins.
