Be aware that no matter how many FDs that are available on the
production system, if you compiled squid on a system that has only 1024
FDs then that will be what it will compile with.
I ran into this problem at another site where our dev system only had
1024 FDs and I had to hack types.h (as Brian suggests) to set it to 4096
for some of our systems.
You should also remember that unless squid is compiled with
--enable-poll it will use select() which is restricted to 1024 FDs.
Recent squid versions all use poll() by default.
Perhaps it is time to suggest that there be a configure option
--with-filedes=nn so that we don't have to hack types.h?
