[squid-users] Squid slow to respond initially

I'm running squid-2.4.STABLE6-6.7.3 and I find it takes a while to
initially return anything, once it starts serving the page back to the
browser it is quick , but the delay can sometimes be up to 30 seconds or
so. When I bypass the proxy I get almost instant response. Is there
something I can do to speed this up? I looked for possibly a reverse
dns setting and only found the log_fqdn setting, I set it to off, but
this did not help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
