Replacing the winbindd_nss.h didn't yield any improvement. Nor did
updating to PRE12. I recompiled the samba package from source with
the --with-auth-winbind-challenge addition also. However I continue
to have the same problem.
        Currently the only debian packages that are available are 2.2.3 and
the 2.999+3.0cvs20020827-1 version that I am using. I really don't
want to get away from using the debian packages, but it seems I don't
have much else in the way of variables to get rid of.
I will try 2.2.6pre2 shortly.
        Unfortunately my boss is running out of patience. Everyone else in
my IT department wants to use MS proxy software instead.

I tested this and it appears to get things going with Samba 3.0a19
and Squid 2.2.5pre12 under FreeBSD.

I would expect the same with the debian package.
