I think that 1024 is sufficent . The things that you must note is that
try ulimit -HSn 1024 before running squid in shell .

Subject: [squid-users] Increase file descriptors in linux 2.4
Hi:
I'm sorry my english...
I need increase file descriptors in RedHat 7.3 kernel 2.4.18, I modify
ulimit and sysctl parameters (fs.file-max = 4096, fs.inode-max = 16384),
but in squid rpm package don't increase value of file descriptors:
Starting Squid Cache version 2.4.STABLE6 for i386-redhat-linux-gnu...
Process ID 676
With 1024 file descriptors available
How I can increase file descriptors ?
