Actually, I managed to pinpoint the problem with Hans Juergen von
Lengerke's sollution.

It hapend to be that squid, as user squid didn't have the right
permission to actually enter the /usr/local/squid directory
(executable bit). All subfolders had the appropiate permissions
though.

I never thought of this as root did have the right permission..
