[squid-users] Squid exits frequently on signal 6

Hello,

I am baffled by a problem where squid exits abnormally, and quite
frequently. I am running Squid 2.4STABLE4 on a 2.2.21pre2 Linux 1GB RAM,
AUFS on 3 SCSI disks. I recently upgraded to a P4/1800Mhz since I was under
the impression it could be a load issue, however I have come to terms with
the fact that this can happen even at lower loads and therefore not related
to lack of hardware performance.

The cache.log is not very helpful as to the cause, however the syslogs
reports the following:

Mar 8 16:41:45 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 552 started
Mar 8 17:55:39 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 552 exited due to
signal 6
Mar 8 17:55:42 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 660 started
Mar 8 17:55:45 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 660 exited due to
signal 6
Mar 8 17:55:48 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 666 started
Mar 8 17:55:50 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 666 exited due to
signal 6
Mar 8 17:55:53 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 672 started
Mar 8 17:55:54 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 672 exited due to
signal 6
Mar 8 17:55:57 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 678 started
Mar 8 20:36:00 (squid): xrealloc: Unable to reallocate 131008 bytes!
Mar 8 20:36:12 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 678 exited due to
signal 6
Mar 8 20:36:15 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 724 started
Mar 8 20:43:00 squid[550]: Squid Parent: child process 724 exited with
status 0
Mar 9 17:28:27 squid[8224]: Squid Parent: child process 8226 started

The "xrealloc" message I have only seen once, the exit due to signal 6 is at
least 3-4 times a day. Sometimes, squid gets caught in an infinite loop and
I have to kill it and restart it manually.

What I find strange is that the last entry to the cache.log is something
normal, and suddenly I get a "squid terminated abnormally" message and it
rebuilds the store.

Would anyone be kind enough to point me in the right direction? Could it be
a lack of RAM?

Thanks again,

Ron
