I'm trying to compile it on a redhat 7.1..

There are no updates for the autoconf or automake rpms on
updates.redhat.com..

[root@machine]# rpm -qa | grep auto
autoconf-2.13-10
automake-1.4-8

are these not new enough versions ?

You most likely need to upgrade your automake or autoconf installation..

Robert: Isn't the tool chain supposed to assert that correct versions
are used?
