Probably bitten by a compiler bug. The FreeBSD 4.3 gcc version is
somewhat broken... (in fact I know of no released GCC version without
bugs.. but the situation seems to have got worse in 2.95 and later..)

Try

env CFLAGS="-g" ./configure ....
make clean
make install
