Thanks Dave, but I used 'bill' like a
test to see if a wrong parameter causes an error message and
to see if Squid recognizes a wrong value.
My problem was caused by an unexpected line in
squid.conf (far below from default parameters):
cache_dir /var/spool/squid 100 26 256.
For this Squid recognized '/var/spool/squid' as parameter
Type.
The first time I edited squid.conf I used vi. The second
time I used linuxconf.
Linuxconf has added the additional unwanted line in a line
far from default values, and so my mistake.
