Linux 2.2.16 and file descriptors

Hi,

I need more that 1024 file descriptors.
Can someone tell me if the FAQ is up to date regarding this issue,
in http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ-11.html#ss11.4

It's with Squid 2.3 STABLE 3.

I modified limits.h, and my /proc/sys/fs/file-max shows 4096.
When I ./configure, it says 2048 (I had to put a "SQUID_MAXFD=2048")
but when I run Squid, it says 1024.
