squid running off a secondary ip address

Hello,

I've been using the various versions of squid for a few years now, and the vast
majority of problems I've had
have been config problems ie my fault. I've no doubt that this problem will be
the same, but hopefully someone well
tell me the fix..

Its a simple setup. I'm working on a ha solution using linux virtual server and
heartbeat. Most of that is turned off for the
moment whilst I debug my squid conf.

A server has its main ip and a secondary alias address. I cannot for the life of
me get a reliable client connection to squid
on the alias. All I get are connection refused (using telnet on the port). So it
looks like squid is not binding to the secondary
address or something. Even with a very default squid.conf

I can connect to the main address no problem.

If I use tcp_incoming_address etc I can prevent access to the main address but
the secondary still does not work. I thought
the default behaviour was to accept from any address. Would someone give a
example tcp_incoming_address, outgoing, udp
etc example just in case I'm being stupid (very likely).

Any ideas?

Setup:
linux mandrake 6.1 i586
2.2.13-22mdk-smp kernel
2.2.STABLE5-hno.20000103

Thanks

Dino
