It sounds as though squid is crashing. To get any
further than that, it is necessary to look at the
cache log, and, if possible, get a trace back from
any core file.
1GB of RAM is a lot. You didn't say how much
disk is associated with this.
[ You might want to investigate alternative mail programs
that encode the charset correctly (i.e. don't use 8 bit
MIME headers and gb2312 character sets when the contents is
pure ASCII). It arrived at the mailing list base64 encoded. ]
