The formula I have seen gives ~10Mb for 1Gb of cache space.
metadata memory = cache_dir size / average object size (usually ~13 Kb)
* 100 bytes
(remember to put all values in bytes)
total memory need = metadata memory + cache_mem setting + 20MB + OS
requirements + some minutes of bandwidth (at least one) for filesystem
and networking buffers.
