Can you still telnet to the box? does it have a low CPU utilisation while hung?
We had a problem with large sites on slow links to our proxy filling up the
incoming syn connect ? queue - we fixed it by increasing by having the
following in rc.local : echo 256 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_max_syn_backlog. We
found it by doing a netstat, and seeing a large number of SYN_ACK connections.

Or could be the delay pools - haven't used them yet.
