Out of FD - answer is not in FAQ

Hi,

i'm running RH 5.2 with kernel 2.2.12, with adjusted OPEN_MAX to 4096 in
 limits.h
 On this machine i make myself SQUID-2.2.S4.

 In higer load aprox. 18.4k requests perhour squid starts write to cache
log:
 Reserved FD adjusted from 100 to 917 due to failures
 Your cache running out of filedescriptors
 Your cache running out of filedescriptors
 and so on....

 Please, what is BAD?

 machine is Intell P133, 64MB RAM, 6G HDD
 This machine is parent for next 20 childs chaches with various HW
 configurations, but
 with the same version of SQUID.
