Select Loop failed causes imminent death.

Hello,

I have been experiencing a problem with Squid 2.2stable3. For the last
few weeks, in unknown circumstances I have seen the following error in
my Linux messages file:

Jul 18 23:53:08 cachebox (squid): Select Loop failed!
Jul 18 23:53:25 cachebox squid[209]: Squid Parent: child process 211
exited due to signal 6
Jul 18 23:53:28 cachebox squid[209]: Squid Parent: child process 2488
started

What happens next is really interesting; squid restarts, however the
eth0 card is totally dead; the machine no longer pings and is no longer
visible from the network. However, if I log into the console everything
seems normal. I have to reboot to restore eth0 connectivity.

Any ideas?
