mem usage squid.1.NOVM vs. squid.2

Does squid 2 use a lot more memory than squid.1.NOVM? Since I upgraded to
squid-2.0.PATCH2 the pagefaults/HTTP requests ratio went up from practically 0
to 0.33.

When I tried squid 2.1 the machine almost went down because it ran out of
memory.

So, back to 2.0, but I need to bring down the amount of memory squid uses to
get some speed back.

Can I set the cache_mem value to 0 MB or does that have negative
side-effects?
