Counting fds at startup

Would it be possible for Squid to determine the available number of file
descriptors when it starts, rather than having it compiled in? A quick
loop opening /dev/null should do.

I run several Squids on various Linux boxes, some with kernel patches,
some without. It would be help me greatly if I could use one binary for
all of them, and mean I could use an off-the-shelf Squid from a
distribution.
