The problem is that BSDI 2.1 has too low limit for data size of a process.
See what "limit" or "ulimit" command says and then rebuild your kernel
with options like 
options		"MAXDSIZ=\(256*1024*1024\)"
options		"DFLDSIZ=\(256*1024*1024\)"
                           ^^^ tweak this for the size you want :-)
