SSLeay seems a good choice if you want to do more enthusiastic SSL support. Put in
the hooks, and let people fetch the SSL library (if in USA or Canada), or the
SSLeay library (if elsewhere..SSLeay _is_ subject to _import_ restrictions to the
USA. Same legal problems as getting SSL _out_).

Nevertheless, the public interfaces are compatible. Anyone who wants support can
fetch and build the library, and on their own heads be it. That's how apache does
it, among others.
