Squid httpd accelerator mode support for SSL

I have been running squid (ver 1.1.16) for some time as a httpd accelerator. I now need to add SSL support in this mode. Squid does support SSL when running as a proxy but does not seem to support SSL in the httpd accelerator mode. Any ideas?
