Mmmm, as of 6.2, yes, SGI systems do have MTU discovery.  And yes, I'm
fairly certain that www.sgi.com is running 6.2. 
Let's take this offline (I can help with debugging this as I know who
to contact internally).  Can the affected parties email me directly?

Also, try the same experiment but use www-europe.sgi.com; that box is
still running 5.3 so doesn't have MTU discovery.  It's also in europe
(well, <duh>) with a completely different 'net connection, which may
be part of the problem. <shrug>
