By HTTP to the proxy... (which does FTP to the FTP site)
The http proxy (Squid) is acting as a gateway between HTTP and FTP,
translating HTTP requests to FTP requests.
To support native ftp proxying (from ws-ftp and other) you need a native
ftp proxy, for example ftp-gw in the TIS toolkit.
