ftpget and symlinks

Has anybvody tried to get ftpget to display symlinks in a more explicit way?
It would make the squid cache work better since it wouldn't hide the
"physical location", allowing squid to detect that two alternative paths
lead to the very same object.

Ideally a symlink like

lrwxrwxrwx 1 toto 22 Mar 2 17:32 toto -> http://www.toto.com/

would also work (even though it (probably) won't work on the local file system)
