I can't agree more with Don Lewis.
Trying to make a program smart, but not making it smart enought to get
100% right is perhaps more confusing then letting the user do the
appropriate selection (if presented in a intuitive way).
I propose the following for directory listings:
For each entry, give three links. One on the name without type,
one for "ascii" and one for "binary".
Duane came with a good idea on what to do when ftpget can't guess
what type of file it is: If ftpget gets a request for a file with
unknown type, then ask the user wether this is a binary or ascii file.
I think that these two changes together make a very complete
implementation, and hopefully not that confusion for people that don't
know about ascii/binary...
Summary
1. Directory listings should contain two additional "icons" (shown after
the file) for ASCII/BINARY override.
2. When ftpget can't guess what the filetype is, then the user is asked
to select whether this is a binary or a ascii file.
