problems with accelerator/proxy under squid 1.1.5

I am using suqid 1.1.5 on a DEC OSF/1 machine running DEC UNIX 4.0

I am running in accelerator mode to a second machine on port 81

  When I load the page initially all is well.
  If I hit relaod I get nighbor unavailable, with a link to the
         page that failed
  If I hit the link that failed field the page reloads.

This does not happen with Squid 1.0.17.

I have had to revert to 1.0.17 to continue working. The evidence
suggests there is a bug in 1.1.5, but at this point I am unsure how to
pursue it.

Any thoughts?
