strange. I'm running 1.1.2 since 26th Dec, now on tree hosts without any problem.
(Linux kernels 2.0.24,2.0.25,2.0.27, now 2.0.27 on all hosts, libc-5.3.12-8, gcc-2.7.2-2)
the linux installation is a (somewhat different) mix of redhat 2, redhat 3 and redhat 4 on all systems.
Maybe USE_BSD or USE_GNU or ... is turned on on the problem machine?
The only one trick I use is "make ICMP_OPT='-DUSE_ICMP=1 -DHAVE_IP_HL=1'"
I use rpm to build Squid, and that ensures I never forget to run configure.
If someone is interested in the build technology, I'm ready to publish the details.
(rpm spec files, supplementary scripts etc).

After seeing send timeouts, I changed the timeout setting for the apache server,
it was 400 (seconds?), now it is 3600. I hope that will be enough.
If someone still has problems with downloading, timeout settings of the intervening
caches should be checked, I seen CLIENT_ABORT's too in the httpd log file.
