Guys,
I've had another person poke me about this, also involving mass
apt-get upgrades.
I'm not entirely sure how to go about fixing this - I thought about
setting up a http server which will _only return_ chargen-style
content files, and having squid enforce this particular data body.
I think this is a "drop everything and fix" bug, and it will almost
certainly take quite a bit of effort to find. :(
Any suggestions on where to look in the 2.5 branch?
Adrian

I've been seeing this too, on Solaris 8 (SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-15 sun4u sparc
SUNW,Ultra-4).
The best way to "exercise" the bug has been to do a debian package update
("apt-get dist-upgrade") which pulls a lot of packages down through the proxy.
Usually, one or two will fail their MD5sum check.
I tested 2.5.STABLE1 last night on another box (SunOS 5.8 Generic_108528-13
sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250) - 15 out of the 349 packages downloaded were
corrupted, and there was no other traffic through this test proxy.
2.5.STABLE1 was compiled with gcc-3.1 and configured with :
./configure --enable-snmp --enable-cache-digests --enable-delay-pools
'--enable-removal-policies=heap lru'
2.4.STABLE7 in production was compiled with gcc 2.95.3 (the one that
ships with Solaris 8 on the "software companion" CD) and configured
the same as above.
...i'm happy to provide whatever other info's useful, of course.
