parsing of messages passed by ftpd on the remote system

I have hacked wu-ftpd to return a message when people try to download
from a certain directory.

According to rfc959 the error number 214 supposedly means:

         214 Help message.
On how to use the server or the meaning of a particular
non-standard command. This reply is useful only to the
             human user.

I want the message that I am returning to be printed to the user,
but instead squid says:

The following FTP error was encountered:

      .3/gamesdomain/demos/sracer.txt: Not a directory.

This means that:

The given URL does not exist, or is not readable.

ftp ftp.is.co.za
get xs.txt
local: xs.txt remote: xs.txt
200 PORT command successful.
214 You may not download files in /.3/gamesdomain - try ftp://gamesdomain.is.co.za/ instead!

Am I missing something, or is squid handling these incorrectly?

Netscape says:
Netscape is unable to find the file or directory named:...
Check the name and try again.
